Cascades and Carnivores

What type of electricity do they use?
The voltage is 220. Make sure your electrical appliances work on that
system or get easily attainable converters with a ?South African?
adaptor.

Which side of the road do they drive on?
They drive on the left like they do in Britain. Roads are very good
with major four lane freeways common throughout the country.

Can I use my ATM card in South Africa?
Yes, all banks have ATM machines. If you are using a credit card, make
sure you have a ?PIN? number to access your account.

What type of food will I expect in restaurants?
Food in South Africa is a rich blend of international cuisine. You can
find all types of ethnic varieties. In the safari camps, you will find
various game to try as well as traditional European dishes.

Will I see the ?Big Five??
Game watching is always good, but seeing all five of them: i.e.
Elephant, Lion, Leopard, Cape Buffalo, and Rhinoceros can never be
guaranteed. Animals move about constantly and may or may not be in the
exact location you are.

Is it safe?
South Africa like all countries has crime and you should always be
aware of your situation, just as you would at home.  However, in the
major game reserves you will have no problems,  and in  tourist areas
you will find a significant. police presence.

What type of currency do they use?
They have the South African Rand as their base currency. However,
banks will always be able to exchange US Dollars or Euros for the
local currency. You will also find Currency Exchanges located in many
major areas. Many Restaurants, hotels, and  tourist locations will
accept Dollars and Euros although you might not get the best exchange
rate.

When is the best time to go?
That depends upon what you are looking for. Remember that South Africa
is south of the Equator so seasons are opposite those in the northern
latitudes.
Whale watching is between June and December depending upon the type of whale.
Game watching is more concentrated between August and  October when
the water holes dry up and the animals have to work harder to find
water.
But basically all tines of the year are excellent to see game and
visit the country.

What is the weather like.
It experiences all seasons, depending upon where you are. Summers
(December to March) can be very hot, and some areas will get snow, but
South Africa has the highest number of ?Sunshine? hours per year of
any country in the world.

What is the infrastructure like?
You will find South Africa to be on a par with any European or North
American country. Banks, roads, hotels, restaurants, medical
facilities and all the other types of amenities you need are readily
available and of first rate quality.
